Leadership Development

15 Minutes
of leadership instruction, every K–8 student, every school day.
180 Days
2,700 minutes — 45 hours of explicit leadership development per year.
12 Traits
revisited in four 45-day cycles: Discover, Practice, Serve, Defend.
1,620
grade-specific, scripted daily lessons across Kindergarten–Grade 8.
A Daily program - not a poster on the wall
At Leadership Academy of Arizona, leadership is not an assembly, a slogan, or a once-a-month theme. It is a daily, schoolwide academic program. Every K–8 Warrior participates in a protected 15-minute Youth Leadership Development lesson every one of our 180 school days.
The Warrior Way teaches leadership as a set of learnable, observable behaviors. Students learn a common language of 12 Leadership Traits, practice them with classmates, apply them through service and real leadership roles, and prove their growth with evidence — journals, digital portfolios, student-led conferences, service logs, and a Grade 8 Portfolio Defense.

Leadership Is Taught Here -
Every Student, Every Day.
The Warrior Way: Lead with Courage. Learn with Purpose. Serve with Honor.
The 12 Warrior leadership Traits
Every trait is written in student-facing language, so children, teachers, and families all say — and live — the same words.
Optimism
Energy/Zest
Curiosity
Courage
Social Intelligence
Creativity
Integrity
Humility
Leadership
Initiative
Focus/Self-Control
Grit
Four Cycles, one year of growth
All 12 traits are revisited four times each year across four 45-day cycles, moving students from recognition to public demonstration:
CYCLE 1
Discover
Learn the language of leadership. “I can name and recognize the trait.”
CYCLE 2
Practice
Use the traits with classmates and adults. “I can practice the trait with others.”
CYCLE 3
Serve
Apply the traits in service and projects. “I can use the trait to solve problems and contribute.”
CYCLE 4
Defend
Demonstrate growth with portfolio evidence. “I can show evidence of my leadership growth.”

How a Daily lesson Works
Every lesson follows the same proven 7-step format, so instruction is consistent from Kindergarten through Grade 8 while activities grow with the student:
- Warrior Launch - a hook, question, story or challenge
- Trait, Objective, and Standard - the trait, the learning target, and the Arizona standard connection
- Vocabulary and Direct Teach - academic language with examples and non-examples
- Model the Warrior Way - the teacher thinks aloud and shows the behavior
- Guided Practice - partner talk, role-play, movement, scenarios, and discussion
- Independent/Collaborative Application - students create real evidence: journals, goal cards, service notes, portfolio artifacts
- Reflect, Recognize, and Connect Home - self-rating, peer recognition, and a family “Ask Me About…” prompt every day

Aligned to Arizona Standards - and to every subject in the academy
The Warrior Way is built on Arizona State Academic Standards. Every weekly lesson names its grade-level standards connections in English Language Arts, History and Social Science, Educational Technology, Career Literacy, and integrated mathematics and science — prioritizing the essential standards identified in Arizona’s Standards Blueprints. The leadership block reinforces and applies core academic instruction; it never replaces it.
The Warrior Way calendar is also the academy’s alignment spine. Every discipline — ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, PE, Computer Science and Digital Fluency, Art, Music, and Spanish — follows the same week number, day range, weekly topic, and leadership trait. A 2nd grader and her 7th-grade brother study the same Warrior Way theme in the same week, each at their own grade level, and skills deepen grade by grade from Kindergarten’s “Children as Citizens” to Grade 8’s civic leadership and Portfolio Defense. Families hear one consistent message all year long.
A program of real leadership - not just lessons
- Leadership journals, self-assessments, goal setting, and digital badges
- Student leadership portfolios organized around Wisdom, Character, Discovery, and Service
- Student-led conferences in fall and spring, where students present their own growth evidence
- Service learning, Student Leadership Action Teams, Student Government, buddy mentoring, NEHS/NJHS, AGLOA, and Junior Achievement
- Daily schoolwide Morning Ceremony, monthly PBIS leadership rallies, leadership walls, and the May Leadership Awards
- Grade 8 Capstone Week and public Portfolio Defense — every graduate defends their growth with evidence
- Full access for English Learners, students with disabilities, and military-connected and mobile families, with visuals, sentence frames, alternate response options, and bilingual family communication
One-of-a-kind, and built to show it
The Warrior Way is an original Leadership Academy of Arizona curriculum: a K–8 Guidebook, a charter-aligned curriculum map for every grade, a Teacher’s Edition with 1,620 scripted daily lessons, a 180-day Morning Ceremony script, and full-color student workbooks. Here is a glimpse.
From the youth leadership development Guidebook
Instead of “Be good” … say “Show integrity: choose what is right even when no one is watching.”
Instead of “Try harder” … say “Use grit: name the obstacle, choose one strategy, and keep going.”
Daily success criteria: a visitor should be able to identify the trait of the day, hear students using leadership language, see students practicing or reflecting, and name at least one way the teacher recognized leadership in action.
From the K-8 teacher's edition - Kindergarten, day 1
Warrior Launch: Hook with the mission, pledge, and three pillars; ask students how a Warrior can practice Leadership today. Use picture, movement, oral response, teacher dictation.
Model the Warrior Way: the teacher thinks aloud and models the Kindergarten response frame: “A Warrior shows Leadership when ___ because ___.”
Access supports: visuals, word bank, sentence frame, partner rehearsal, read-aloud support, alternate response, accommodation/assistive technology as needed.
From the 180-day morning ceremony script
“Good morning, Warriors. Please come to attention. Today is Day [DAY] of our 180-day school year… Our Warrior Way focus today is [TRAIT]. A Warrior shows this by [TRAIT ACTION]… Warriors, lead with courage, learn with purpose, and serve with honor. Have a strong day of learning.”
inside the student workbooks
Every student works in a full-color, grade-specific Warrior Way workbook. Each weekly page mirrors the 7-step lesson: a four-panel visual model of the trait in action, a Warrior Launch prompt, vocabulary, guided practice, badge and portfolio evidence choices, a reflection, and an “Ask Me About…” family conversation panel.
